When your decision-making process is based on your emotional feelings you will quickly fall into a gambler's mindset, and make decisions without rationalizing your thoughts. This is a quick route to losing money faster than you earn it. Do not get greedy After a winning streak, it is easy to fall into a similar mind trap. You will likely think you understand, and play the game, and as a result, start to take on more risk. At some point you will take a loss unavoidably, and trading a much larger size than usual, or not placing stop losses out of overconfidence can evaporate all the profits you made with hard work and effort in one moment. Funding: Deep Dive

In an earlier article, I covered the uniqueness of the funding mechanic to the cryptomarkets and how it revolutionized contemporary trading instruments. In this article let us take a deep dive into its inner workings. How does funding work? Funding rates consist of two main components. The interest rate and the premium. On Bitget futures, the interest rate is set at 0.01% every 8 hours, bringing us up to a total of 0.03% a day. The premium is determined by the difference in price between the perpetual contract and its m ark price. When the market experiences times of increased volatility or enters a strong sentiment in a specific direction, the price between the perpetual contract and the mark price may diverge. In these instances, the premium increases or decreases accordingly. A high premium means that there is a large divergence with the mark price, whereas a low premium indicates the opposite. When the funding rate is positive, the perpetual contract is higher than the mark price. This means that leveraged markets are heavily biased on the long side, causing potential liquidity issues. Therefore long positions pay short positions in an attempt to balance out the order books. When the funding rate is negative, the price of the perpetual contracts is lower than its mark price, thus the funding mechanic favors short positions, and thus long positions pay short positions. Funding rates is a peer-to-peer mechanic, and happen directly between users without an exchange being involved thus, no fees are taken from Funding Rates. How does this affect traders? Funding calculations take the amount of leverage used into consideration. Therefore, funding rates may have a big impact on one's profits and losses. A trader in a position with high leverage that pays for funding may suffer losses and get liquidated even in low-volatility markets. Bitget accounts for this by allowing it to charge funding at most until the user's margin rate is equal to the maintenance margin rate and a certain percentage of the remaining amount, and the excess will not be charged. On the other hand, collecting funding can be very profitable in specific market conditions such as range-bound markets. Essentially, Funding Rates are designed to encourage traders to take positions that keep perpetual contract prices in line with underlying spot prices. This is highly unfavorable, as this can lead to heavy emotions. This means that from this point on, any decision you will make while managing your position is led by inconfidence and is solely fed by emotions. You can easily get rid of this by simply making a plan before entering into a new position. Having an entry point, invalidation, and target set before taking any action can help take away the emotional side of trading. Putting in the work before, makes trading much easier, as you only simply need to follow the plan. If the trade works out, great. If it doesn't, then there is going to be another opportunity soon. Taking losses is normal in trading. Key is to keep them small, and let your wins be bigger. Therefore focus your energy on your preparation, rather than running after yourself. Take your responsibilities Once you have taken on a position, then take your responsibilities. Follow your plan, and take profits where you said you would. If you dont it can simply be classed as greed. If you do not take profits in time, then you might have been in a nicely profitable trade, only to end up in a losing trade later on. The same goes for cutting your losses in time. Take your responsibility and if the trade did not play out, simply get out. A small loss is really not a problem, but if left unattended the loss can lead to damage in your portfolio beyond repair. Therefore, take your responsibilities, and follow your plan. In this article, we explored the concept of leverage and how it works. This article will focus on how leverage can help you manage risk. Leverage: A double-edged sword Let's do a quick recap. It begins with the understanding that there is risk involved with every opportunity. With trading on leverage, there is no difference. The first and most obvious risk is the fact that leverage trading is a double-edged sword. While one can make larger profits, the losses will also be larger. In addition to that, the higher your leverage level is, the closer your liquidation price lies, which would mean if hit, you lose your entire position and, in some cases, your entire account balance. What if leverage can actually reduce your risk? If you have done your research, then you know that trading leverage is risky. But what if leverage can actually help you manage the risk instead of increasing it? Right now, you might think: "Mike, I have never heard something as ridiculous as this." But have you considered the fact that keeping all of your funds in one exchange, for example, is more risky than storing your crypto assets offline? This is where the mechanics of leverage can actually work in your favor. By using leverage, it is possible to enter a position size larger than what you have available in your exchange account while keeping your overall risk management in check. What does this mean? Imagine the following scenari Scenario 1 You have a portfolio size of $20.000. This portfolio is spread out over multiple exchanges, and a part is stored on a hardware wallet. In order to take that risk, you would need a position size of $20.000. However, trading and investing are two vastly different approaches to generating profits in the financial markets. In part 1, I put the focus on the psychology aspect of the two, one that is often overlooked. In this second part, let's dive deeper and let's learn about 3 key differences between investing and trading. Timeframe Trading is a method of holding an asset for a short period of time. It could be a week, a day, or sometimes even minutes. Traders focus more on the shorter timeframes and typically trade the markets long on increases in price, and short on decreases in price. Investors seek to invest their money for some months, but more often for years or even decades. Short term fluctuations are insignificant in the long running investment approach. An investor plans a multiyear idea carefully and, once in position, does not touch the position unless a macro opportunity presents itself to either compounding onto the position or reduce exposure. Value and Price Traders look a t price movement of an asset in the markets. If price goes higher, the trader may sell the stocks. When price goes lower traders may buy again. Trading revolves around the skill of being able to time the market on the shorter term. Investors however are seeking out the underlying value of the asset. They believe in the company or product and decide to back the project by investing money into it. The price that the asset is trading at is much less relevant. The investor seeks to create wealth by compounding interest and dividends over the years by holding quality assets within their portfolio. Risk Unavoidably, both trading and investing imply risk on your equity. However, arguably trading involves higher risk than investing. Traders are opening and closing positions on a much more frequent basis and therefore put their portfolio at risk much more often then the investor. The investor participates less heavily, and therefore, once the position runs in a favorable way, the risk becomes smaller, and often non-existent. An investor is also more focussed on balancing exposure, and generally more involved in hedging. Is one approach more profitable than the other? The simple answer is no. One approach is not necessarily better then the other, as small gains on a higher frequency can lead to overall large profits, whereas investing generally generates larger return percentages. Ultimately if executed well, both approaches can be equally profitable. In the end it is up to you to decide which approach suits you, your daily life, and your personality best.
