President Nayib Bukele has firmly responded to the new demands from the IMF , describing these pressures as mere “whining” without consequence on his national strategy. “If it didn’t stop when the world ostracized us and most bitcoiners abandoned us, it won’t stop now, and it won’t stop in the future,” he publicly declared, reaffirming his vision of a financially independent El Salvador. This inflexible position fits into a broader strategy aimed at transforming the Salvadoran economy and reducing its dependence on the US dollar. Since 2021, the country has bet on bitcoin as a lever for economic transformation, using it as a store of value against inflation and as an attraction tool for international investors in the fintech sector. In this wake, Tether , the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, also announced on January 13 that it was relocating its headquarters to this Central American country, further enhancing El Salvador’s credibility as a global crypto hub. Thus, El Salvador continues its bet on bitcoin, paradoxically using the IMF loan as an economic shield while pursuing its quest for financial sovereignty through cryptos. Nucleus Marketplace operated from 2014 to 2016 as a prominent dark web hub for illegal drug sales and contraband, utilizing cryptocurrencies like bitcoin for anonymous transactions. The platform vanished abruptly in April 2016 amid speculation of an exit scam—where administrators absconded with user funds—or a security breach. At the time, its wallets reportedly held over 5,000 BTC, valued at approximately $2.25 million when it happened, and the funds remained untouched for nearly a decade. Blockchain data indicates the wallets, long presumed abandoned, initiated transactions on March 7, 2025, marking the first activity since the market’s disappearance. The movement of such a significant sum—now worth hundreds of millions of dollars due to bitcoin’s appreciation—had drawn attention from Arkham Intelligence. Potential actors include original administrators, hackers, law enforcement agencies, or third parties who gained access to private keys. “Wallets belonging to Nucleus Marketplace woke up this morning after 9 years of inactivity, transferring $77.5M worth of Bitcoin to 3 new wallets,” Arkham wrote on X. “Nucleus Marketplace wallets still hold $365M BTC.” Arkham added: Nucleus Marketplace was a darknet drug market, and it was believed that the founder had either been apprehended by law enforcement or had exit-scammed when the market went offline in 2016. The BTC held in their wallets has not been moved until today. Nucleus Marketplace’s legacy complicates the implications of this activity. The platform facilitated tens of thousands of illicit transactions before its shutdown, and unresolved legal cases tied to its operations could resurface. Law enforcement may seek to seize the funds if linked to criminal activity, while hackers or rogue actors could attempt to liquidate the bitcoin. Onchain data identified specific addresses, such as “1GGe3,” last active in April 2016, which are part of the darknet’s cache. Verification via blockchain explorers is ongoing to confirm the scope and destination of the movements. As of March 7, 2025, the motives behind the activity remain unclear. China Asset Management Hong Kong (China AMC HK) launched its Digital Money Market Fund on February 28. The fund, built on the Ethereum network, combines blockchain technology with traditional finance and is the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific region. The fund has been approved by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). It aims to allow people to access money markets through a blockchain, and this is because Hong Kong is trying to establish itself as a blockchain hub for innovation. China Asset Management is one of China’s largest fund management companies, with over RMB 2.58 trillion in assets ( December 31, 2024). China AMC is the parent company of China AMC HK. It is also worth noting that Chinese companies with the title “China” are often approved by the government, offering an extra layer of security. “This milestone is a key step”, said Gan Tian, CEO of China AMC, “in our strategy toward Web 3, with tokenization being a critical focus. Tokenized funds offer revolutionary advantages, such as blockchain-based title issuance and transparent settlement”. Tian stressed the importance of tokenized securities, pointing out that they have the ability to transform traditional markets, providing better access to what would otherwise be restricted to a few institutional investors. According to Tian, the launch of the Digital Currency Fund showcases how blockchains can be used to improve traditional markets. Unlike traditional bank deposits, money market funds offer higher yields, short-term trading, and relatively safe investments. A tokenized version of these markets improves upon these benefits, adding faster settlement times and lower investment thresholds. Ethereum tokenized funds allow China AMC to embed interest-bearing tools on the blockchain, providing retail investors with more accessible income streams and offering traditional investors new advantages of blockchain trading. The funds use fractional ownership to lower the investment threshold. “By bridging traditional finance and decentralized finance”, said Tian Gan, “the product is part of China AMC (Hong Kong)’s commitment to innovation and align with broader industry trends toward tokenization. By harnessing blockchain technology, we not only provide an innovative and compliant investment solution but also equip investors with a future-ready platform for the next generation of financial products”. With the approval by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the blockchain community has more access to investment opportunities. Access to the fund includes other benefits of blockchain, including publicly verified, scalable, and secure transactions. The fund also offers diversified investments to retail consumers, but with scalable settlement capabilities. The parent company of China AMC HK, China AMC, has greater ambitions for the blockchain community. It aims to create more funds in America and Brazil, develop a global presence, and further draw investors back to China. Mary Huen, CEO of Standard Chartered in Hong Kong, said she is happy to help China AMC HK provide an innovative product to clients because it allows retailers to make money from blockchain technology and further establish Hong Kong as a blockchain hub. Hong Kong authorities have been actively seeking new blockchain technologies to attract global investment and to make markets more liquid.
