Seventy-two crypto ETFs await SEC decision in 2025 shift
A record 72 cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund (ETF) applications are currently under review by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas.
This surge in filings comes as the SEC, now led by Chair Paul Atkins, signals a more open approach to digital asset regulation following the departure of former Chair Gary Gensler.
The pending ETFs cover a broad range of assets and strategies, from established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), Solana (CRYPTO:SOL), XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), Litecoin (CRYPTO:LTC), and Dogecoin (CRYPTO:DOGE), to more unconventional tokens such as PENGU (CRYPTO:PENGU) and leveraged products like the “2x Melania” ETF.
Major issuers behind these filings include Bitwise, Grayscale, Vaneck, Fidelity, Franklin, Hashdex, Wisdomtree, and others, reflecting significant institutional interest in regulated crypto investment vehicles.
“There are now 72 crypto-related ETFs sitting with the SEC awaiting approval to list or list options. Everything from XRP, Litecoin and Solana to Penguins, Doge and 2x Melania and everything in between. Gonna be a wild year,” Balchunas stated.
The SEC’s decisions on these funds, with deadlines extending into late 2025, are expected to significantly influence how digital assets are integrated into traditional finance.
Industry analysts note that while the number of filings reflects growing demand, approval does not guarantee widespread adoption, particularly for lesser-known altcoins.
Chair Atkins has pledged to establish “a firm regulatory foundation for digital assets through a rational, coherent, and principled approach,” aiming to resolve long-standing industry concerns about inconsistent guidance and regulatory uncertainty.
The outcome of these ETF reviews is seen as a pivotal moment for both institutional access to crypto and the future direction of U.S. digital asset policy.
