In a moment of reflection on the future of cryptocurrencies, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum , has expressed his concerns about the direction the industry is heading. In an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session held on February 20, Buterin raised important questions about ethics and market priorities, especially with regard to blockchain applications and staking.
During the AMA, ETH co-founder has received a question related to your biggest disappointments in the industry. “Over the past year, have there been times when you felt frustrated or let down by the Ethereum Foundation, the community, or the industry? Looking back on the past year, what events have left you feeling disappointed or even frustrated? Have you ever considered taking a break?”
Buterin expressed frustration and disappointment at what he called a “moral reversal” in the industry, referring to growing criticism of Ethereum’s stance on staking apps, often referred to as blockchain “casinos.” He lamented the shift in values, where financial incentives and a laissez-faire approach appear to be trumping ethical considerations and the development of apps with positive social impact.
“Perhaps the most disappointing thing for me recently was when someone said that Ethereum is bad and intolerant because we don’t respect blockchain ‘casinos’ enough, and other chains are happy to accept any application, so they are better,” Buterin said during the AMA.
His statements reflect a growing divide in the industry between those who advocate for ethical and socially beneficial use cases for blockchain and those who prioritize profitability and unfettered application development. Buterin’s concerns highlight the need for a broader debate about the role of cryptocurrencies in society, as well as the importance of balancing technological innovation with ethical responsibility.
