New theory links Jack Dorsey to Bitcoin with 15 chapters
A new theory suggesting Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter (now X) and Block (formerly Square), could be Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC), has sparked debate in the cryptocurrency community.
Seán Murray, president and chief editor of deBanked, presented a series of connections between Dorsey and Bitcoin in a recent post on X, compiling facts, numbers, and dates across 15 chapters.
Murray's theory includes several notable observations.
He claims the first Bitcoin transaction occurred on Dorsey's mother's birthday, January 11, while the last block mined by Satoshi supposedly happened on Dorsey's father's birthday, March 5, 2010.
Additionally, Murray states that Satoshi signed up for the Bitcoin forum on Dorsey's birthday, November 19.
The theory also points to Dorsey's background in cryptography and cypherpunk culture.
Murray notes that Dorsey was among approximately 1,300 verified cypherpunks in 1996 and wore an Adam Back t-shirt in his university yearbook.
Murray claims that Satoshi used "brute force" to create Bitcoin addresses, including one beginning with "jD2m," which he suggests stands for "Jack Dorsey 2 Mint," referencing Dorsey's former residence.
He also notes that Satoshi's email was hacked on September 8, 2014, with the hacker allegedly trying to extort Satoshi by revealing a connection to St. Louis, Missouri - Dorsey's hometown.
Critics argue that it's unlikely Satoshi, who created uncensored money, would later censor information as Dorsey did at Twitter following government intervention.
Others question whether Satoshi would wear a "Satoshi" shirt in public, as Dorsey did at the 2024 Super Bowl.
"It makes you a massive asshole, because you're painting a target on them," stated Bitcoin cypherpunk Jameson Lopp criticised Murray's theory.
Dorsey himself has not addressed these claims, though he previously denied being Satoshi in a 2020 interview.
While intriguing, the theory remains speculative, joining a long list of hypotheses about Satoshi's true identity.
At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $96,372.98.
