Mempool Research: Bitcoin block size may increase to 4 MB

Mempool Research states that since the Bitcoin Taproot upgrade, block size has been steadily increasing, but there is still more room for growth. According to a report released by Mempool Research on February 4th, widespread adoption of inscriptions could potentially bring the average block size of the Bitcoin network up to 4 megabytes (MB) per block, far higher than the current average level. The report says that the average block size of Bitcoin (the amount of data contained in each block published on the public ledger network) is currently slightly above 1.5 MB. Mempool Research suggests that if inscriptions (a method for effectively encoding any data within a block) are adopted more widely, Bitcoin's block size could significantly increase.
