Software and blockchain firm Ripple Labs is in the news following a recent interview with CEO Brad Garlinghouse. The CEO pushed the adoption of XRP while speaking at an event involving the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Swiss National Bank. Edward Farina, CEO of Alpha Lions Academy, shared a short video on X, showing Garlinghouse presenting XRP’s capabilities before the IMF and Swiss National Bank. Farina commented that Garlinghouse destroyed Bitcoin while presenting the case for XRP. In his presentation at the event, Garlinghouse mentioned that XRP was birthed by engineers who recognized Bitcoin’s (BTC) limitations. He explained that Bitcoin still has scalability challenges, with slow and expensive transactions. On the other hand, he said XRP is about a thousand times faster and offers cheaper transactions. The Ripple CEO also addressed the issue of pre-funding in cross-border payments. According to him, the current system requires financial institutions to maintain capital reserves in different countries to facilitate international transactions. Garlinghouse argued that XRP is designed to eliminate these limitations by enabling global liquidity on demand. Additionally, Garlinghouse outlined Ripple’s long-term vision for payments. He compared blockchain technology to the foundational technologies underpinning the internet, such as TCP/IP and HTTP. Garlinghouse sees the possibility of blockchain networks facilitating a seamless exchange of value similar to these technologies. The CEO added that this transformation would create an “internet of value” where payments can move as efficiently as data. He highlighted that traditional correspondent banking has left some countries and payment channels underserved. Garlinghouse, therefore, contends that XRP could fill this gap, democratizing access to liquidity and creating a more inclusive financial system. Furthermore, he cited a real-world scenario of freelancers in developing markets who struggle to receive small international payments due to high fees and banking restrictions. According to Garlinghouse, XRP can handle this issue by allowing small payments to flow between borders. This emphasizes the firm’s position as a leader and innovator in the industry. The post from Farina got mixed responses from the online crypto community. Some agreed with Garlinghouse’s assessment that XRP offers real-world utility with greater speed, lower costs, and better scalability than Bitcoin. One user even said Bitcoin is a distraction from the real disruption in financial services. “He’s not wrong. Bitcoin opened the door, but XRP was built to walk through it with real utility. Faster, cheaper, more scalable,” added @RebelRepublicX on X. Others, however, think Garlinghouse is pushing too hard to promote XRP as a financial instrument. While they acknowledged XRP for its speed, they said the coin lacks backing. Overall, Garlinghouse’s comments in the video reflect Ripple’s vision to position XRP as a practical solution for global payments. As of this writing, XRP price was trading at $2.37, down 3.7% over the previous day. This decline comes amid a broader market bearish sentiment. Bitpanda, the Vienna-based crypto asset platform, has secured a broker-dealer license from the Dubai Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). The license enables Bitpanda to open its platform to users from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Securing the license is a significant step for Bitpanda, which already has a permanent office in Dubai at the DMCC Crypto Centre and a team of regional experts to develop products tailored to the UAE market. According to a statement, Bitpanda expects to start onboarding UAE users in the coming months. Lukas Enzersdorfer-Konrad, deputy CEO at Bitpanda Group, stated that obtaining the VARA license aligns with the company’s goal of making virtual assets secure and accessible. “With our VARA license, we are bringing that vision to the UAE, ensuring investors and financial institutions have access to a fully compliant digital asset platform. This is just the beginning of our expansion beyond Europe. We are ready to grow in a region that embraces innovation and regulation equally,” Enzersdorfer-Konrad said. Nadeem Ladki, global head of Bitpanda Technology Solutions, noted that obtaining the license is a milestone for the crypto asset platform as it kickstarts the expansion into the Middle East. According to the statement, the VARA broker license is a testament to Bitpanda’s proactive approach to regulation. The company currently holds several licenses, including a Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) license from the German regulator BaFin. It is also registered with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and holds a Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) e-money license and a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) license. The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has announced significant progress in its Digital Dirham initiative, unveiling the official symbol for the nation’s digital currency. It also confirmed a planned retail launch in the final quarter of 2025. This development is a key component of the CBUAE’s Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) Programme, designed to solidify the UAE’s position as a global leader in financial market infrastructure and digital financial innovation. The Digital Dirham, underpinned by Federal Decree-Law No. (54) of 2023, is set to become a legal tender, ensuring its acceptance across all payment outlets and channels alongside physical currency. According to a statement, the CBUAE aims to create a secure and efficient digital version of the national currency, leveraging blockchain technology to reduce payment costs and ensure data privacy. Individuals and businesses will be able to access the Digital Dirham through licensed financial institutions, including banks, exchange houses, finance companies, and fintech firms. In the statement, the CBUAE highlighted key advantages of the Digital Dirham, including its ability to facilitate tokenization for improved financial inclusion and liquidity. It also cited its compatibility with smart contracts for automated and instant transaction settlements. H.E. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said: “We are proud to unveil today the new symbol for the UAE’s national currency the ‘Dirham’ in both its physical and digital forms, and the design of the Digital Dirham wallet. This reflects the significant advancements in the implementation of the Digital Dirham programme and a leap towards realising the CBUAE’s vision.” To support the Digital Dirham, the CBUAE has developed an integrated and secure platform, including a user-friendly digital wallet. This wallet will enable a range of financial transactions, including retail, wholesale, and cross-border payments. The platform is designed to accommodate innovative financial solutions, catering to the UAE’s rapidly growing digital economy. Balama added: “It is anticipated that the Digital Dirham as a blockchain based platform with cutting edge capabilities shall substantially enhance financial stability, inclusion, resilience, and combatting financial crime.
